Stay After SAVIS Terminiation
Understanding your US stay after SEVIS cancellation matters.
How Long a Student Can Stay in the U.S. after SAVIS Termination ?
It depends on the reason your SEVIS record was cancelled, but here is the general rule:
For a straightforward termination of an active record (such as failing to maintain full-time enrollment, dropping below credit requirements without approval, or any other violation of F-1 status), most guidelines state you must leave the U.S. “immediately” or “as soon as possible.”
See: OSU International Students and St. Olaf College International Student Office.
Some universities may allow a 15-day grace period only if the termination was “authorized,” such as an approved early withdrawal or formally approved leave of absence. This short period is meant to let students prepare to depart.
Sources: Study in the States (DHS) and JHU International Services.
If you need more time to stay legally, you may apply for USCIS reinstatement, but it must be done quickly and only works under very specific conditions.
More information: Boundless Immigration Guide and St. Olaf College Reinstatement Guidance.
Because timelines and consequences vary depending on why your SEVIS was terminated (authorized withdrawal vs. violation, school error vs. student action), it is critical to speak directly with your school’s Designated School Official (DSO) for accurate guidance.
